High-Velocity AC or Mini-Split AC: Which One to Choose?

High-Velocity AC or Mini-Split AC: Which One to Choose?

There’s no question that a durable air conditioner will keep your living areas cool and comfortable. However, with so many types of AC systems to choose from, selecting one can be a challenge. Luckily, you can narrow down your options if you know what you’re looking for.

If you want an HVAC system that is compact but powerful, your options boil down to two: a high-velocity AC and a ductless mini-split AC.

High-Velocity Air Conditioners

High-Velocity Air Conditioners

A High-velocity air conditioner shares the same functions as a central air conditioner. However, it’s about 1/10th the size of a traditional unit so it can easily fit both new and old homes. The high-velocity AC system is also more aesthetically pleasing since its indoor air handler is placed in the basement or attic. Plus, the high-velocity system is designed to cool your home faster so you can generate a pleasant temperature with just one unit.

However, high-velocity air conditioning does have its faults. Since it cools your entire property, all of your rooms will have the same temperature setting. This system is also louder and more uncomfortable because it pushes cold air at a higher rate.

Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners

Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners

The ductless mini-split AC consists of two parts: an indoor and an outdoor unit. The indoor system is responsible for cooling and delivering the air back into your living spaces while the outdoor unit dumps the heat from the warm indoor air outside. Both units are connected by a single tube, making the entire HVAC system a space-saving addition for any home. This also means that it doesn’t require any ductwork to function.

Unlike the high-velocity unit, the ductless mini-split air conditioner is quieter and allows you to zone different areas on your property for temperature zoning. However, the mini-split air conditioning system can be distracting and has a higher initial cost than other options available. You’ll also need to purchase multiple systems to cool your entire home.
